Cyrano is having a moment right now: a movie starring Peter Dinklage and a Broadway show starring James McAvoy. I figured now is as a good a time to read it as any. I haven't read a play in a while. I expected a tragedy about a swordsman betrayed by his nose who never knows love but through letters attributed to another man. That's part of the story but it's no tragedy. The show is more of a comedy, with swashbuckling scenes of bravado at an outdoor play or haughty tales of fighting off a hundred men single-handed while retorting in verse! It was a fun and quick read. I'm curious what modern productions keep and leave out.

Ooooo did some of the lines in the final act ever punch me in the gut

I will admit that my choice of this book was influenced by my daughter. She got to see this play performed at the Utah Shakepeare Festival and just loved it. She said all the girls thought it was great. Since I had a play category, I chose to read this one.

I am not quite as crazy about the play as she was, but I did enjoy it. I loved the first part of the play. Cyrano is a great character. What I didn't enjoy as much was the whole selfless adoration involved. I don't want to spoil it, but let me say that I felt Cyrano should have spoken up sooner.

Funny and sad at the same time. The translation by Christopher Fry was rich, yet easy to follow. There is so much depth in the story that isn't covered between the lines.
