Cyrano de Bergerac is a love tale that speaks to my soul. When I finished it I thought I was confused by the writing style and the storyline, but after further research I learned that I actually love it. I love the story, and Cyrano as a character is just amazing.

I read this after seeing the movie and the play definitely focuses more on humor than the drama. I can enjoy them both in their own way. I definitely recommend this audioplay as the cast is definitely something to enjoy.

Best primer on nose insults I've ever read.
No, seriously.
Read the Brian Hooker translation if you can.

What a great book! I read it in an old English version, so there were words I didn't know. Thank God my Kindle has a dictionary! I wanted to read the "book" before seeing the movie. It was fun, but you have to feel bad for poor Cyrano.
Moderate: Death, War
A classic French play - well translated into blank verse by Brian Hooker - and a renowned romantic story.
Cyrano is a man of many talents: an incredibly skilled swordsman, quick-witted and always ready with a comeback, and a poetic genius. However, due to his oversized nose, he believes he is ugly and will never be loved... which is especially devastating given how much he adores the beautiful Roxane. By contrast, Christian, Cyrano's fellow fighter in the Cadets and the man Roxane desires, is very handsome, but struggles to express himself.
Together, the two hatch a plan to become the one ideal lover - Cyrano secretly providing words of love to compliment Christian's good looks. But war is looming...
This magnificent play, which provides some brilliant comedy in the first three acts, is made so much more poignant by the tragedy that follows in the closing two. Scenes I particularly relished include the theatre duel and the matching of insults, Cyrano's eccentric "moon" story, and the often-emulated balcony scene. Personally, as a reader, I lost my heart to the dashing and creative Cyrano before the end of the first act - which makes his self-hatred all the more pitiable.
An absolute must read, and if you can catch a production of it too (I personally enjoyed the Gerard Depardieu film, the Jose Ferrer film and Kevin Kline's Broadway performance), then all the better.

Une ode à l'esprit français, au panache et à l'amour galant! Je crois bien avoir presque pleuré en lisant la dernière scène... à lire absolument.
