I have read several versions of this poem, and this is my favorite. Every time I read these, I am reminded that these are eulogies for men who lived more than 1400 years ago, who fought for their land, and who all died trying to keep it. It's incredible to read, and when I think about it, incredibly sad. The fact that this set of poems has lasted in the world this long is at once mind-blowing and humbling.

This was an unexpected delight. It doesn't explain much, it is definitely repetitive, and the majority of the verse is just about how great people are at killing, but it was beautifully translated and it's utterly fascinating and there are so many striking little details about people in their laments-- this one is freckled and handsome, this one is shy with girls, this one is filled with rage--- snippets of portraits of young men who might have died some 1400 years ago (I know it's disputed). Loved this.
