I liked most of the stories in this book, but not all of them. My favorite was the one with Danny, even though it is so close to true crime BS. But I felt the most engaged during that story wanting to know how it ended! I also loved Laurie (sp?)! But I am always a sucker for a good dog story. Would recommend if you like King’s books.

It’s been a bit since I have read a King book, and I have always felt the short story is the best medium for horror. You Like It Darker had much of the trademark depth I remember from King’s work, but perhaps less “creature” type horror this time around. In this installment, King tackles big, real-life horrors: war, grief, loss of a child(ren), loss of spouse, injustice, and persecution (just to name a few).
I picked up this collection of short stories hoping for more of the creature feature horror but was instead surprised by how emotional many of these stories made me (I cried a few times). If you are hoping for a “spooky” read, there are certainly a few eerie moments in these tales, but overall, this books seems to speak to the fears in all of us, the fear of real-life tragedy.
What I Liked:
- My favorite entries: Rattlesnakes, Laurie (love the dog!!), The Dreamers and The Answer Man
- “The Fifth Step” was one of the shortest stories, but I liked the twist on that one.
- I really liked “Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream” – it’s easily the longest story in the book, but I thought this most clearly evoked the characterizations I am used to with King and I was racing to see how it would end.
What I Didn’t:
- I didn’t quite understand “Red Screen” - that's probably a personal failing, or it was perhaps intentionally ambiguous, but I wasn't sure how to feel at the end of that one.
- “Finn” was my least favorite entry.

my first stephen king! I enjoyed it, particularly Billy Coughlins Bad Dream and Rattlesnakes. Lots about the maddening feeling of experiencing something no one else can see.

Something of a return to his better form, maybe his best short story collection since Skeleton Crew

Too many stories that include the Covid-19 pandemic… it’s too soon for me to want to read fiction that includes that horrible time in life.
