Thanks to libro.fm for the free audiobook edition through their ALC for Educators program.

Sweet story about navigating friendship during middle school years, told through an intriguing mystery that felt high-sakes without introducing any real peril in the main characters' lives. While I appreciated the detailed interactions between the main character and the various reliable adults in her life, I also felt that some of the conversations were a bit contrived -- especially the interactions between the group of friends and the college professor -- which felt a little too preachy, or slightly heavy-handed in modeling "good" behavior. I like that there were so many positive role models available to Maisy and her friends, but in so many ways the extent to which this crew went on making a documentary film had me wondering whether it might be setting unreasonable expectations for how early teenagers would engage intellectually on a group project for school and execute such a polished final product.

Book #143 read in 2022

Thank you Hachette Audio and @librofm for the complimentary audiobook!

💭 I loved this story! Not only is it a story of discovery for Maizy herself; learning about her own friendships and that it’s okay to be exactly who are, it’s a story of past friendships.

The nostalgia surrounding the Nancy Drew books was like a warm hug. I remember reading those when I was Maziy’s age. Some of the references to all the things Nancy could flawlessly do, made me wonder if a reread of them would hold up for me.

The characters and the narration were perfect and fun! I would recommend this to any middle grade reader and to those who loved Nancy Drew as a child themselves!

Thank you LibroFM for the gifted audiobook of SISTERHOOD OF SLEUTHS!  All opinions in this review are my own.

SYNOPSIS

When a mysterious box full of Nancy Drew books and a picture of Maizy's grandmother appears at her mom's store, Maizy is curious who the other women in the photo are.  The more Maizy tries to find out, the more her grandmother denies that it is even her.  With the help of her friends, Maizy will solve this mystery and finish her project on Nancy Drew!

WHAT I LIKED

- Makes Nancy Drew appealing for young readers
- Doesn't try to hide Nancy's past and explains the revisions made in the 1959
- Mystery follows the Nancy Drew structure
