One of those books I've carried around since I was 14, hadn't read it in at least a dozen years.

I just adore Berg's writing style, the imagery is so vivid, it's easy to be transported into the story.

Brought me back to when I was younger and how I viewed the world.

Reading this and another book about an abusive (step) father at the same time was a mistake. This is a sad one to read, Berg does a good job of making you almost root for the dad even as you want him locked up. I'm going to read the next two, I somehow wound up with the third so I put that aside and requested this from the library. The author does a great job of capturing that 12-13 year old mindset.

"On the hot Texas army base she calls home, Katie spends the lazy days of her summer waiting: waiting to grow up; waiting for Dickie Mack to fall in love with her; waiting for her breasts to blossom; waiting for the beatings to stop. Since their mother died, Katie and her older sister, Diane, have struggled to understand their increasingly distant, often violent father. While Diane escapes into the arms of her boyfriend, Katie hides in her room or escapes to her best friend's house - until Katie's admiration for her strong-willed sister leads her on an adventure that transforms her life." (From Amazon)
The greatest of the Katie Nash books as it is the first one! We are introduced to Katie and her older sister as they lose their mother and are stuck with a father not equipped to be a single parent. I love the warmth of Berg's writing and the way her characters pop.

Elizabeth Berg writing a laundry list on a napkin would surpass much of what's out there, so a 2 star review is not because of her talent. I just didn't enjoy this (short) novel nearly as much as some of her others.

A wonderful coming of age story. This author captures the emotions of a young girl struggling through life. Elizabeth Berg is an expert at writing how all of us may have felt at one time or another. She is one of my favortie authors and this is one of my favorite books by her.
