5 stars all the way
I am so confused that the rating on this book is not higher...
Jane Washington is seriously a genius.
From Page 1 I was hooked.
I have no idea how this will be a reverse harem yet, so warning that this is a slowburn and possibly enemies to lovers.
But I do not even care.
It is truly a work of art.
The worldbuilding, the characters, the setting, everything is so well thought out and unique.
I am obsessed and sprinting to the next book immediately.

This is full of fascinating lore and world building, and I stan Lavenia. At the end of this book, I basically hate everyone except her. I maybe like a couple of side characters but I don’t trust them

2 stars.
This was endlessly confusing, but it wasn’t the worst book I’ve read. Certain things bothered me about this book, but overall the characters were okay and Tempest was a decent main character. By the end of the book I got so confused that I just gave up on the idea (delusion) of understanding this series. And yeah, I’ll be probably be reading the rest of the series because they’re trashy books but they’re the best kind of trashy.

The start is slow but I would recommend anyone who has patience to hold on, because the upcoming books in the series will sweep you off your feet.
It’s surprising well written, however, I feel like the books is doing too much.
I wanted to like this book because I love Ironside Academy. I thought I was just in a rut so I put the book down and read a few other things but when I picked it up I just felt meh about the story.
Maybe I will pick it up later but i don't know

2 - didn't like it
This book follows Lavenia, a cursed child of a mother and a society that doesn't want her. From a young age, she was told that where her heart should be, there was only death, and whoever was near her would be cursed with death as well.
When the power she's suppressed for years comes out, and she has unintentionally had her fate declared, stuff changes for her. The death of her mother and another, though unintentional on her part, are her fault, and she is decreed guilty. Her sentence is to be served among the five masters of the five magics there are in the world, and all of them want something from her. Her fate is far bigger than she's realized, and they're determined to challenge her as hard as they possibly can.
For basically anything she asked, she has to give an enormous IOU for something that may not even be worth it in the future. But she has no bargaining power, very few people who care about her, and an impossible task: to save the world from the world of the dead. .
All of the odds are stacked against her.
I...didn't like this book.
It was well-written, sure, and I've really liked what I've read from this author in the past. But there is no hope. The majority of the characters are absolutely terrible people actively trying to fuck up Lavenia's success.
This latter part makes very little sense to me, because her success spells the survival of an entire world...? And theirs? The five masters say that they're doing it to make it so she's prepared dor her role, but none of it seems like preparation. All of it seems like manipulation, control, and abuse. You'd think the masters would have a vested interest in her successbut apparently they want her to die, and also marry them, and to die at a time of their choosing? Like, what? It DOESN'T MAKE SENSE .
This book doesn't have a lot of hope or redeemable characters. Its pacing is pretty slow, which is fine, until it comes to her developing relationships with her fellow Sentinels and leading up to her legionnaires battle, and then it feels really rushed.
I also don't understand all the bargains made. Nothing comes for free, and she seems to get much less out of it than any of the people she's bargaining with. She's running so deeply in debt, she can't possibly hope to escape from it.
Idk. I just didn't like this book..I didn't like the story, the characters, the concept, the hopelessness, the shittiness of the world, etc. I don't think I'll be reading the next one.
