Eh, not bad, but I don't particularly care enough about the characters to keep reading the series. Granted, it takes a lot for a SciFi book to pull me in, so this could be entirely personal. Still, eh.

I wanted to like this book because space and alien invasions and humans struggling to survive and space battles... but I just didn't. The story felt rushed; I get that it was a fast-paced actiony kind of novel, but I feel like more time could have been spent on world building and developing the secondary characters more.

Also the prologue was just not necessary and rather dumb. An action scene space battle taken from about two thirds of the way through the book. The author clearly wanted to start his story with a bang but using that scene just didn't work because I didn't know the characters or the world or what was going on. It was just a mess. If he wanted to open with some action then something from the main character's past would have worked better or even something about the alien invasion.

The "twists" near the end... both sort of came from nowhere and felt rather unbelievable. Like I said, more time needed to be spent on world and character building. The story felt like a very rough first draft.

Ok, so I got this book at a sale at audible last year, and finally I got around to listen to it.

I'm starting to realice that I don't really like hard sci-fi, like this one.
Books that are set in deep space with spacefights and stuff like that.
I like the science of it, but all the fighting, and weird names and stuff, just throws me.

This book was no different.
Also, I'm getting a feeling there often aren't much of a story.
Like in ''Dark Space'', where the only plot really was to shot people and fly and shot people.
It just doens't do it for me.

But hey, if your into it, you'll probably like this book!

Dark Space. . . this was a different read for me. I'm just getting into the whole 'space opera' reading thing and I'm not even sure this book is considered a 'space opera'? Either way, I liked the book. I'm not sure I could take on the whole series though. Only reason being the technical battle aspect. It seemed a little Ender's Game at one point, but I see that as a head nod to the awesomeness of sci-fi and the authors most well known for it, I guess.

I really can't pin point what exactly had me not so into this, I just know I'm probably not going to read the next one. I liked it. But I wasn't struggling for air when I finished it, which for a series I need that to continue reading it. That whole reread the last page because you can't believe it's the last page aspect.

Either way, this was entertaining, well written and had space battles and laser guns fights. Which you can't really go wrong with laser guns.

I really wanted to like this book based on the premise. The setting itself works quite well, as a 'Wool' style post-apocalypse novel, but set in space. The twist, while obvious, was perfectly intriguing, and the positioning of the main character to experience it on behalf of the reader was good.

So what was wrong? It's simply badly written - pages and pages of exposition and not a sentence of dialogue uttered without a paragraph of explanation in case the reader might not notice the implications. This is particularly bad at the ending, which is a series of coincidences - some more believable than others - that really don't seem to string together.

With some strict editing and a bit more faith in the reader, this could be a much better novel.

Another "action in lieu of character development" story. Not bad. Not great. Cheap "ending"...
