I've been reading Joey Comeau's words for over a decade now and they've never moved me as much as this little book has. What begins as another semi-ironic, tragicomic concept - a girl named Sunday memorializing her dying father's words for a computer virus - becomes an elegant sketch of a family's strength in character and love in each other. All the while, Comeau's touch keeps the prose light and careful, never veering into melodrama nor diving into raw shock.
This is perhaps the first of Comeau's novellas that have drawn me in hospitably as A Softer World so effortlessly, and so painfully did. In past work I have always felt an observer watching on as an ever-more wild scenario unfolded, its logic drawn through metaphoric brilliance in conceit too jagged to ring with more than a metallic sheen. But here, the prose reinvents itself as the simplest of stories, and it finds itself and room for its reader, too.
It's delicate and painful, honest and true. A book to cherish.

Underread but not underrated, Malagash is a quietly powerful novella that weaves just the right amount of quirkiness and comic relief into a story about grief and how a girl tries to turn her dying father’s voice into a computer virus so he can live forever.

this was a quick read yet slow-paced, which worked well for the story. it does a really good job showing what grief looks like when you lose a family member. i wasn’t super into Sunday’s whole virus idea, but i enjoyed reading about her and her brother’s relationship. the complicated family dynamics felt realistic. the small rural town setting complimented the story well, it emphasized how isolated everyone was

This audiobook was done so well. As I am currently in a "grief" stage in my life, I am glad I found it now. I was crying and laughing; reflecting on my own life along with the characters. I definitely would tell others to enjoy this story-it was a very quick 'read'.
