Very good book written from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective. There are helpful techniques for dealing with chronic pain.

The title of this book could be simpler— I t’s a good overview of how to practice Buddhist principles while simply being a human being. Yes the author’s chronic illness supplied the examples and anecdotes, but really it’s tough enough being a human being and the book is useful for anyone. A good overview, though not what I was expecting.

As a guide for those who are ill and are not getting better this is an excellent book. The only negative is really more of a feature than a bug is that it is heavily routed in Buddhist approaches to suffering and to life. So many of the ideas and techniques require not buddhist believes but budhist like practices. As a non-budhist I can still benefit but there is maybe more work to do. I probably wanted a smaller, simpler toe dipped into buddhist approaches more than this provided but that is not a fault of the book which is of a type we should see more of. Books not offering magical cures but offering ways of coping with what cannot be cured.

Found out that there’s an updated edition, published in just the last few years, and I want to read that one instead.
