Loved - but hated the ending even though I KNOW IT WAS A HAPPY ENDING. Like, the absolutely beautiful breakdown of patriarchal hierarchies becoming 'default' even when consciously fought against. This story felt so deeply painful for me - the horror is that even when we fight it, the heteronormative patriarchal dynamic will settle over us like a blanket and suffocate us and we will have nobody to blame but ourselves for becoming tired of fighting (I'll cry Y WE GOTTA JUST KEEP FIGHTING ALL THE TIME AND THE MOMENT WE R TIRED IT ALL HAPPENS ANYWAY UGHHHHHHH)

Like fr just eat the man and the child I've had ENOUGH why is the happy ending that she just had to ask for help and he was fine with helping I HATE IT HERE EAT HIM EAT THEM ALL

“You light a fire early in your girlhood. You stoke it and tend it. You protect it at all costs. You don’t let it rage into a mountain of light, because that’s not becoming of a girl. You keep it secret. You let it burn. You look into the eyes of other girls and see their fires flickering there, offering conspiratorial nods, never speaking aloud of a near-unbearable heat, a growing conflagration.”

I signed up for crazyness when I picked up this book but I didn't know it was going to be this crazy.

I enjoyed the premis and beginning of the story, I was curious as to what this story was going to entail. I was intrigued with this story being about a mother who is struggling with motherhood in present society and how she is slowly turning into a dog because of it. I really enjoyed the exploration of said topic but then it felt like the book a 180 and just went with 'she's a dog' and it kind of lost me? The book was under 300 pages and yet it felt like I was reading a 600 page book because it was written so slow, I seemed to not advance while reading. I did not dislike it by any means but, like I said, from the half way point it lost me and I, still, don't really understand where the story was going. It still made great remarks on motherhood in modern day society and how women really suffer silently but then it just went on about her being an actual dog and killing random animals, because she is a dog.
~thoughts entering my head~
  • Maybe she was killing all those animals because of the anger she carried with her of being a mother. The husband is almost never home and she had to give up her whole life for her son because she couldn't bear the thought of him being raised in a daycare, without his mother present. When she finally turns into a dog she can unleash this bottled up rage and act freely like dogs do. I still did not like the killing of those animals though.
  • The way she raised her son as a dog was pretty weird to me? Because the son is acting like a literal dog because she feels like a dog. I did not really and still don't understand this but what I noticed is that the husband just let's it happen. I mean at first he kind of questions all this but ultimately accepts this extremely weird situation which shows how not involved he is with the child and how the raising of the child ultimately comes down on the mother. The son sleeps in a kennel, like an actual dog and nobody bats an eye.
While I appreciate the message of the story, it just may have been a bit to crazy for me and definitely way to drawn out. This could have been shorter by like at least 100 pages.
