Loved - but hated the ending even though I KNOW IT WAS A HAPPY ENDING. Like, the absolutely beautiful breakdown of patriarchal hierarchies becoming 'default' even when consciously fought against. This story felt so deeply painful for me - the horror is that even when we fight it, the heteronormative patriarchal dynamic will settle over us like a blanket and suffocate us and we will have nobody to blame but ourselves for becoming tired of fighting (I'll cry Y WE GOTTA JUST KEEP FIGHTING ALL THE TIME AND THE MOMENT WE R TIRED IT ALL HAPPENS ANYWAY UGHHHHHHH)

Like fr just eat the man and the child I've had ENOUGH why is the happy ending that she just had to ask for help and he was fine with helping I HATE IT HERE EAT HIM EAT THEM ALL

not in a place emotionally to deal with the
graphic cat death at the end of the book
, not really into the cat abuse i was listening to at the 1hr mark either

love female werewolves though &the themes of motherhood, alienation & how society others you; would like to pick it back up again, probably not in audiobook form though so i can more easily bypass the cruelty i dont want to see

I really enjoyed Yoder’s writing style and the way she used different elements such as animals, gore, “dark” thoughts, and societal composure to develop this complicated MFC. She showcases how every woman is multifaceted and beneath all her layers is a person, or in this case, an “animal”, that wants to be cared for, to be heard, and to be free.

I really liked the beginning; it was a solid start. However, the further I read, the more tired (and slightly bored) I felt. Sadly, I just lost interest in a story and themes, which on paper–female rage, art, a female weredog, transformative magic–I should've thoroughly enjoyed. This book would have definitely benefited from a massive edit (i.e. cutting out many repetitive plot points) to turn it into a novella. Also, I didn't care that much for Nightbitch's child; he was too prominent a character.
A moment of silence for the dead cat and bunnies. Was that really necessary, Yoder?

I have never read anything like this. Rachel Yoder really hit the gas and kept pushing. Didn’t let up for a second. Saw your hand fly to the handle, locked the door and said buckle up babe.

This book follows a woman in her early 30’s as she struggles with her sense of identity and purpose while being a stay at home mom to her toddler son.
She becomes paranoid that she is turning into a dog and wrestles with her instincts as a mother, as an individual, and as a Woman. She finds amusement and comfort in the support of other women. She finds balance in letting her odd instincts take over. She kills her house cat and starts to eat raw meat. She crate trains her son.

This is a creative and surreal journey into self-identity within and alongside motherhood and womanhood.
