Definitely a different kind of book, definitely in a good way. One of the best things about it is how episodic it seems. There are so many times that I expected a potential problem to explode into a full blown conflict, such as when the girls are trapped in alligator infested lands, or when they steal a horse to save it. There are even the normal escalations within these episodes, but they always seem to end up being resolved within 1 or 2 chapters, and in a way that actually seemed to encourage this kind of risky, childlike behavior. It was easy for me, as a fairly anxious adult, to condemn CHILDREN in both of these cases, and almost root for a more consequence riddled adventure, to demonstrate the importance of caution. But there is something childlike about this book; it truly is just following some children and their horses on their summer vacation, and that's enough. There are larger, overarching plots, but they never seem to matter much. Jodie (I think) gets her horse, LeeAnn get's a new horse, and Crown Road are saved; these are either resolved fairly quickly, or only pop up every once in a while, and that's okay.
