Hidden Pictures? More like hidden anti-trans rhetoric. So many dog whistles, from naming both book and author about the boy wizard multiple times to having the liberal coded couple force a girl into being a boy (the idea that liberal parents are forcing their kids to be trans). So disgusted by this book.

 This book devoid of logic

The first 70%ish of this book was actually intriguing, I was so pumped on how the story goes, but everything went downhill from that. The ending feels rushed and devoid of logic. I'm disappointed, I actually looking forward liking this book, because it got me hooked on the first hundred pages. This book was also interactive with the illustrations from the character's drawing, and it was very graphic 100% gave me the fright!

There was one scene from this book that was so preposterous and it was my last straw, like you couldn't even justify it: the character thought a baby powder was a heroin, that was my 13th reasons why.

This was an incredible read for majority of the novel. I really enjoyed the slow burn and the development of the mystery. I enjoyed the subtle inclusion of horror elements.
However there was one section towards the end that quickly removed me from the story and left me grappling with the author’s motivations/real life positioning. I’m not sure if my interpretation was correct and think it would benefit from a group discussion.

So, this was a strange read for me. I didn't really like the characters nor did I like the writing style, but the plot sucked me in. This is also strange for me because I don't read horror and I definitely don't read ghost stories (they freak me out way too much). But I didn't know this book was either of those until after I picked it up.

So, there were a few things that I simply didn't enjoy about this book:
  1. I didn't feel like Teddy sounded like a five-year-old. Maybe seven but not five (then again I don't speak with five-year-olds often (or ever) so...)
  2. There were undertones of transphobia which was a big yikes and made me incredibly uncomfortable.

But, the story itself kept me incredibly immersed and has been on my mind since I finished it, which is what I want from a mystery thriller (which I thought this was). I would've given this book four stars if it weren't for bullet point two.

I’m not sure if the book intended to be transphobic or simply have a big “plot twist” but it was a weird choice for sure.
