I really enjoyed this book up until the big twist. I’d love to recommend the book to others, but the ending, in the vein of the film Sleepaway Camp (1983) , was just a bizarre and offensive choice for a book that was written/published in the 2020s.

Up until the last 50 or so pages, this was a solid 2.5 stars. The writing was much better than the author’s first book (which I also rated 1 star), but the characters weren’t fully fleshed out and the plot was a bit of a mess. So much of what happens relies on the characters being dumb. But the mystery kept me reading anyways. And then the twist came, and Spoiler it was transphobic and disgusting. How was this published in 2022 is beyond me.

I don't know if this book is intentionally bigoted or not.

At best innocently ignorant and at worst dangerously provocative and manipulative subtext. The forefront is a cute haunting drama but at the back everything reeks of projection and caricatures filled with prejudice and false stereotypes.

I really enjoyed the book but the pushy/over the top religion is good and atheist are bad was a bit much. Also slightly transphobic.
