Too slow and the whole book is too long to be motivated to finish.

I really enjoyed this book! It was inventive and interesting--I had a hard time putting it down. I find it hard to be surprised by plot twists because I read so often, but Winters got me with not one but two plot twists, much to my delight. The character development was excellent and I enjoyed the way she shifted the narrative to give us different insights in the story. Even the side characters felt nuanced to me.

The one downside to this is some grammar issues I couldn't ignore. Notably, Winters often uses "which" when she should use "that."

One of my favorite booktok-er's raved about this book, and I am glad I read it! It made me feel, it made me think, and it kept me guessing. There were actually 2 things that happened that I didn't see coming AT ALL, but instead of them feeling out of place, they were laid out so expertly. I was really impressed. Part of what brought down the star rating for me was that I didn't like the FMC for a chunk of the book, or her love interest - but after finishing the book I can see what groundwork the author was laying. I am REALLY looking forward to book 2 in a few weeks.

I know we’re only 15 days into 2023, but I think I’ve found my favorite read of the year.
I’ll admit, my expectations were low. I have not had the best luck with KU reads lately, but I picked this Viking romance up to keep me busy until the CC3 release.
I DEVOURED this book in 2 days.
The FMC was a pure ray of sunshine and was the perfect embodiment of a female character finding strength in her femininity. The banter and found family in this book was something I’ve searched for since reading Six of Crows. I loved the multiple POVs (but Ms. Winters I am begging you to give me more Rey!) and there were a few twists I didn’t see coming 🫨
I loved the writing and the world building. It had just the right amount of 🌶️ for me (probably 2/5 on the 🌶️ scale). If you’re looking for something to satisfy your TOG/Six of Crows/Serpent & Dove hangover, this is it. And I might now be a Viking romance convert 🤔

This was one of the best fantasy books i have read this year. i want to say so much but it's difficult without spoiling anything. personally, i just love "on-the-road" stories, where people get to know each other and live through adventures. there are some heavy topics in this book, but they are all woven into the story and it all makes sense.

i love rey.

jonas' story is kind of tragic. the book is so well-written that you can see the love that forms but you can also see the looming car-crash. nothing jonas does is truly a surprise in the end. and it just shows the circle of violence of how the victim becomes the perpetrator. i am in awe of his characterisation and the portrayal of their dynamic. like.. damn. thats a punch in the gut.

I didn’t know how many pages the book had, when I started reading. Halfway through I discovered that I’ve already read 350 pages.
I really liked the writing style and the pace, even though it seemed a bit to slow in the first half (would describe the pace in the first half as medium)
All in all it was a good read. The plot twist were kinda predictable but not badly made.
