This book was terrible for 80% and was just okay the remaining 20%. The characters were so flat and there were about 300 pages of needless fluff.

This book could use another round of editing. It gets a bit repetitive and there’s a loss of focus on the bloodaxe crew’s quest in favor of getting Silla to Kopa. I also wasn’t a fan of how easily Skaedra was able to find Silla - at some point i had to suspend disbelief that Silla wasn’t purposefully leaving a trail of breadcrumbs. There is also a lack of explanation of the magic system and the worldbuilding i had was confined to meadhouses and bedrolls. With almost 600 pages here i expected a lot more in terms of immersion into the world. I did enjoy the found family vibes, but felt the characters all blended a bit with so many supporting members. This unfortunately meant I didn’t feel the emotional hit when Jacob’s brother died or really with any of the battles outside of the first with her father… There were also soo many moments when Silla could have come clean, but her not telling the truth seemed to be needed to advance the plot (which seemed a bit lazy to me)   The last 200 pages were probably the most exciting and I didn’t see the final twist coming. I’ll most likely finish the series, but I don’t think this’ll be a reread.

Fabulous first book! I've been craving more Viking-esque stories and this one fits the bill. We follow Silla as she pursues safety and peace, finding more than she bargained for along the way.

I loved:
Author's portrayal of disabilities/inclusivity (prosthetics, sign language, etc.) as well as the invidious nature of addictions and lies. The themes of trust, loyalty, and friendships were beautiful and messy (realistic!).

I disliked:
Excessive (to me) F*bombs that many times felt a bit forced and pulled me out of the story. The world is violent and crass by nature, so it wasn't unexpected, just felt like too much for my liking.

Overall the story kept me hooked through to the last sentence. I'm looking forward to where the series leads.

This title is just not working for me. It came recommended from a fellow librarian and I was quite excited about it but the language and plot are too obvious. Elements seem added simply for shock and Drama making the world feel too contrived.
Also, I have an abundance of romantasy on my shelves so I’ll move onto another one instead of forcing myself through one I’m not finding particularly great.
