Not totally my vibe, but fun for something different! Very Viking-y, and too spicy for me personally. I did really enjoy the characters, especially the fmc. She was wonderfully sunshine-y, but not without her struggles. I enjoyed the twist more than I thought I would as well! Overall good plot, good characters, just not my personal taste for all the time!

Reading this became a chore very quickly. By the 50% mark, I realized the plot consisted of traveling, drinking, and lusting after one dimensional, boring characters. By 60%, nothing has changed. I tried to force myself to finish, but I'm starting to resent it, so DNF it is.

In the end, I really liked this book. However, for the first ~190 pages I was wondering *why* I was supposed to care about the MC's journey. I found her implied love interest so unlikable, that I nearly DNF'd.
That being said, the MC grew. The revelation about one character near the end of the book (iykyk) kind of didn't make sense to me. It's unclear how they maintained that secret while surrounded by so many people. However, there's a chance I missed a few details that could've been foreshadowing due to how long it took me to get through the first 200 pages.
Overall, worth the read and I look forward to the second book and what it will bring. I really hope the main character continues to grow, as I really like the direction she's headed in.

I'm currently riding the high that this book has given me, so let's see if I can convey what I need to in order for more people to read this book. Silla has basically been on the run most of her life, moving towns and changing names with her father every few months since she was about 10. One night they are discovered and her father is killed, sending her on a journey across the perilous country to where he said they'd be safe. Sneaking into the wagon of a traveling war band headed in the same direction, she thinks everything will start to look up if she can convince them to let her live once she's discovered. It doesn't.
The people that killed her father aren't giving up on coming for her and the road of bones is filled with dangers at every turn. When I tell you how much I loved Silla's journey and personal growth, I need you to trust me. Silla in the beginning was very much a push over and made some grave mistakes and she continues to do that as she tries to figure out who she is and what happiness, home and safety means to her. Just when you think you know how the story might go, you're wrong, and as more questions are answered, new mysteries are revealed.
The romance in this also surprised me, as it was predictable yet somehow kept me on my toes? And the ending. I'm still in shock, and I absolutely cannot wait until the next book is released because I think it will be so much more intense.

I know we’re only 15 days into 2023, but I think I’ve found my favorite read of the year.
I’ll admit, my expectations were low. I have not had the best luck with KU reads lately, but I picked this Viking romance up to keep me busy until the CC3 release.
I DEVOURED this book in 2 days.
The FMC was a pure ray of sunshine and was the perfect embodiment of a female character finding strength in her femininity. The banter and found family in this book was something I’ve searched for since reading Six of Crows. I loved the multiple POVs (but Ms. Winters I am begging you to give me more Rey!) and there were a few twists I didn’t see coming 🫨
I loved the writing and the world building. It had just the right amount of 🌶️ for me (probably 2/5 on the 🌶️ scale). If you’re looking for something to satisfy your TOG/Six of Crows/Serpent & Dove hangover, this is it. And I might now be a Viking romance convert 🤔
