I adore Rilke, especially the Duino Elegies. But I have to say that, while Snow's translations are beautiful, I will always prefer Stephen Mitchell's, which are no longer in print nor easy to find. But, if you can dig them up used somewhere, DO. His are easily the best and most lyrical.

2nd time through the Elegies. At least. I do prefer this translation (by a lot) to the earlier Norton edition. I'm curious to read Snow's translations and compare.

Rilke remains such a guide, and inspiration.

i'm unfamiliar with rilke's poetry (as i am with most poets that wrote outside of the confines of french and arabic, and i feel almost lucky for that as i have the opportunity to learn from them outside of a strict studying frame). i read these 10 elegies over the course of the last 3 hours, and while i do feel like i should have read them at night, and i did struggle with the length, i do love rilke's understanding of death, of what lies beneath it and where it leads the dead and the ponderings it leads to.

Rilke is absolutely one of my favorite poets.
