On lähes ilmiömäistä, miten hyvin kirja on kestänyt aikaa.

I couldn't remember if I ever read or finished reading The Hunger Games series a decade ago (as part of summer reading in high school) so I bought the Trilogy and Presequel after Christmas last year and finally got to read Book 1. I think I appreciated the story more as an adult than as a teen watching the movies all those years ago. Katniss' voice was so present and raw throughout the entire book. She pulled me in. Even though she's sixteen, the story doesn't feel like it's through a teen's eyes at times, but someone who's experienced a lot of life. Which for her, she had with how her world was.

Well, this was just as good on a second reading so many years later. I'm quite surprised because I feared I wouldn't enjoy it quite as much now I was more grown-up, but I just couldn't stop listening to it. The audiobook narrated by Tatiana Maslany is amazing, by the way: she did such a fantastic job bringing Katniss to life! Her singing in *that* scene actually made me tear up.

There was a lot more nuance to the characters and the worldbuilding than I remembered, and the social justice element was really evident - maybe even a bit too much at times but hey, it still works considering it's a YA novel. I'll continue my re-read with the next book in the series, which I'm even more curious to revisit since I remember very little about it.

Rereading this series to read the newest book (2020) only to announce they’re adding a fourth in 2025! I forget how much i enjoyed this series as a kid, and it still holds up today. I still critique the use of the love triangle, but i understand why it’s included. Overall still a great, enjoyable read.
