I had some trouble with the base premise of the book, in that I have a hard time imaging a society that would tolerate having their children taken and thrown into a death match without challenging it. I tried to see the world described where parents would go along with this, and I my suspension of disbelief just didn't reach so far. But that part aside, this is a well written, very compelling story. I had difficulty putting it down despite it's brutality. It's strange to read a book knowing up front that many, or even most, of the characters are going to die, and you cannot hope that they might survive, but only that those that remain are not forced to act in a way that will leave them too emotionally scared.
This is considered a young adult book, but I would stress the 'adult' part of that. There is constant killing and suffering through the whole book. Wonderful, likable characters die left and right. I do plan to read the next book, but hope that it will step away from the bloodshed and more deeply into some of the interesting cultural and political themes that were introduced here.

Katniss lives in a post-apocalyptic world which is divided into districts. Each district has its own strengths and weaknesses. And each district has to send one boy and one girl to fight to the death in the Hunger Games. When Katniss’ sister is chosen from the lottery, she volunteers in her place and becomes a spokesperson for a revolution.

This story has won many awards and is even in the process of becoming a movie, and its no wonder with the fascinating, deep world, strong female heroine and issues of justice. While the book is long, it is not difficult to read and can spur discussions about a variety of topics, from politics and justice to a strong woman who shows no feminity.

My kind of book! Fantasy, a fast plot- I love Suzanne Collins. I can't wait for the sequel.

I absolutely loved this book. It was so captivating I found it hard to put down. And when I did, I found myself missing it a lot.

The only part that annoyed me was Katniss's indifference to Peeta on the way to home to District 12. The things she said hurt him and it angered me. I guess I understand her confusion, but she could have maybe explained things better to Peeta. Hurt him a little less.

That is I have to say about that.

This book gets an easy 5 stars. I'm already looking forward to reading book two, Catching Fire.
