Even though the author has made a few bad choices, I don't want to judge the book by it's author. I think i'll give it a try and see what I think.

Four stars! Besides the author's rude comments, she still wrote a darn good book.

Let's start with the characters:

America- I have to admit, I despise the name. But I liked the character. She reminded me a little bit of myself. Stubborn and not afraid to stand up for herself, even though she's facing the Prince of her country. She also tries to hold back on the makeup, and to be herself, instead of someone like Celeste.

Aspen- Okay I hated him. I know we find out more about his 'motives' at the end of the novel, but I still really disliked him. At the beginning I liked him. But he just confused me. If you love someone, truly, you wouldn't care if they made you food or were a higher caste than you. And you sure as hell wouldn't egg them on to sign up for something that could potentially take them away from you. So yeah no. When he came to the castle near the end, I was really hoping America would get away from him. She belongs with Maxon.

Maxon- Speaking of Maxon... I liked him. I thought he and America were a good couple. Certainly better than America and Aspen. Though he seemed stuck up at times, and I sometimes found myself doubting his character. Though overall, I liked him. I didn't understand why he kept snapping at America near the end, or
Spoilerwhy he kept Celeste. And also didn't believe America when supposedly he loves her and all that. Hmph.

The plot was good, though after I finished I didn't even feel like I'd read a book. If that makes sense. It went by so quickly.

One part of the romance between Maxon and America that I loved was this:
It took them basically the whole book to actually fall in love. It's different from the other YA novels out there. Definitely. I think it made the reading experience more enjoyable for me.

Besides those points, one of the only complaints I have are the names. I forgot most of them right away. I could tell you three girls that were in The Selection: America, Marlee, and Celeste.

At one point I forgot that Lucy and the other two were actually her maids. It took me a minute or two to figure it out.

I'm really looking forward to the release of The Elite. I certainly won't be buying it, but I can't wait for the library to get it!

If you won't read the book just because of the author's actions, I think you're missing out on a perfectly good story.

~4 stars.

No spoilers. Read via physical.

Bachelor with socioeconomic statuses as a factor. I am really liking the FMC, and can’t wait to see what happens moving forward with her. I like the suspense and drama. This is a different read than I’m used to, which I am enjoying. I also feel like it’s not very YA to be annoying, like it’s definitely YA, but enjoyable as a 32 year old.

Would I recommend? Yes, if you want a YA quick read, I think this series will be a fast read (if you have the time).

I enjoyed this book, but its similarity to The Hunger Games threw me off a bit. The structure of the dystopias are strikingly similar and so are the story lines. A good read though.
