This was THE book. I remember hearing about it in elementary school and that kids were getting in trouble for reading it. This book is so well-written! I remember feeling exactly like that as a kid at 11 years old. Man I was so boy crazy, had my own boy list going probably. And it felt pretty spot on with the exploration of religion at that time.

This is one of my all time favorite books. A great story that everyone girl should read. I read it when I was about 12 and it was incredibly relatable. I've read it two or three times and will probably read it again.

“I don’t think a person can decide to be a certain religion just like that. It’s like having to choose your own name. You think about it a long time and then you keep changing your mind.”

I remember reading this book as a kid but all I could remember was how Margaret really wanted boobs and prayed for God to give her some. I forgot all about her struggles with faith and being raised without a religion due to her parents interfaith marriage & family conflict. This aspect really resonated with me as an adult as I’m trying to navigate my own internal religious struggles, and Margaret is right, you can’t just decide your religion at the snap of your fingers. It takes a lot of soul searching, and while I wouldn’t say 12 year old Margaret did any real soul searching, because she’s 12, that doesn’t mean I didn’t feel her struggle - as comical as hers was at times.
