This is the first book I've read in awhile that has really hooked me. It wasn't perfect. (What book is?) The ending was a bit rushed, and I never felt I really understood the character, Lukas, but overall it was a really good story. The premise--life in the silo--was fascinating; the silo itself, a metaphor for the restrictiveness of their world: restricted communication, restricted relationships, restricted reproduction, and most critically restricted thinking. Most of the characters were very engaging and well-defined. Juliette, the main character, was a strong and intelligent woman, but with distinct vulnerabilities. As the heroine she quite literally braved the elements (wind, water, fire) to find the truth and bring it to others. And I liked how the author played with symbols: The wool, an agent for cleaning (or is it cleansing?) and a symbol of blindness and deception (Juliette refers to "the wool being pulled over their eyes"). And the stars, a sign of the vast unknown, a guiding presence (particularly in the sheriff's symbol) and an oblique reference to the star-crossed lovers. I loved the subtle play of these themes. The author was never heavy-handed. It was a great book and I'm definitely ready for the next installment.
