Me starting this book: oh she found an editor!

Me ending this book: oh she found an editor on TikTok!

Listen, the reason I'm not giving this one star is because I didn't read this seriously. I mean, why would you, when it's so much more rewarding to read it to laugh at it? Why would you try to analyze this book when you can instead come across the phrase "he was the Anthropocene incarnate" written down on paper without a shred of irony attached to it and laugh out loud on public transit? Why would you try to actually figure out what any of these idiots are doing when instead you can spend ten minutes giggling like a toddler about how the author seems to think that electromagnetism is some sort of magical ectoplasm and not, y'know, literally just the light spectrum? Ooooh, the electromagnetism is so strong here!!! So strong maybe we can even see it with our eyeballs!!!

Like come on y'all, it takes work for an author to put this many science words they don't understand together in the same book. Word vomit is labor and I support labor rights!!! Godawful fiction written by women is feminism!!!

better than the 1st, loved the political aspects and the societal critique, i just feel like it didn’t live up to its full potential, still think the story could’ve been concluded in this book as i didn’t like it enough to read the 3rd book (maybe i will later just to have a conclusion, but i think two books should’ve been enough for this storyline)

Slightly more confusing than the first of the series, but god I love this whole wild and flawed group.

I love the concept, I just think the dialogue is unrealistic at times and there is so much duplication in character thoughts. We hear the same things from them over again on a tangent. I really like the character growth from the first books though and the idea that everything is interlinked and 'can there really be such a thing as fate?'

Overall though, I do think others may find this book more enjoyable than I did.

missjustynak's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH

Unfortunately, I tried and tried and I just couldn't get into this story. I felt it was a lot of just going on and on and on about what a character was doing/thinking, but didn't make me feel like there was actual action. I never read the first one, but can't say I liked this story. With a fantasy type adventure like this, I expect to be pulled into this unbelievable world, but instead I just couldn't even keep up with listening because I was bored. Or maybe just from reviews before mine or the hype I had higher expectations. Whatever it was, the writing was detailed, even good, but just not exciting enough.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
