Really what kickstarted my fascination and love of graphic memoirs. I read it on repeat to the point that I had pages memorized.
Book #1 is much stronger than Book #2, but both are equally important in sharing the author’s life story. #2 is much slower than #1 pace-wise, and feels much less eventful.

What a gorgeous graphic novel! Marjane writes and illustrates with honesty, humor and wit to convey her singular experience of her childhood in Iran and Austria, experiencing war and revolution, personal and communal rebellions, fundamentalism and political struggles and more. The graphic novel unfolds in a way that is at once attuned to daily life and Marjane's emotional world, as well as the larger global circumstances that inform her experiences. It is an epic of personal growth and the evolution of a country and a society, connected by a passion for family, home, Iran, friendship, justice and self expression. I felt parented by the meaning making efforts in this journey.

The story was beautifully told and the art was lovely. 

There were moments of humor which were well placed and charming. 

There were times of making fun of one’s appearance or other bullying that were framed positively and were difficult to get through. 

The backdrop of the war was real but it did not feel like a dry retelling of history but rather a truly personal account of how resistance, rebellion, and war impact one’s life.
