I had never read a graphic novel before this book because I thought they were shallow or for kids or immature, but this book defies all expectations. Extremely thoughtful, Satrapi balances the fun and little challenges of growing up with huge political and sociological reflections. She captures exactly what it means to be a child, the way a child's mind works, and how that changes as we get older. She is so humblingly and brutally honest about her life's choices-- and that they don't always make sense, but they happen anyways. LOVE this book. Plus, it'll give you a whole education on Iran's history, which I found really helpful!

just a truly incredible story. the short, quick chapters make years of childhood pass by quickly and the art is striking and bold. marjane speaks with frankness and utter honesty and does not hide anything; her whole heart is bared in this book. while it is certainly not easy to read in any way, this story feels imperative, a necessary read. this book grips you tightly and refuses to let go, even after the last page.

Great emotional story of war and abuse induced on people of Iran. So important to read. The wriitng was very consise and showed the growing of Marji very smoothly. The art was beautiful, but sometimes terrifying. The next story is even more heartbreaking. This really shows what war and oppression can do for a young generation.

This was really well done- the story is obviously incredibly dark and at times hard to read but really well written and explained and I wish my library had access to the 2nd one online so I could read that one as well
