A high note of dread sang through Luke’s veins—a mocking aria that sent a shiver through his bones.
What are you so afraid of? said that same voice inside Luke’s head.
Everything, another voice answered.

well that was a mind fuck and a half. I was unable to put this down—the tension was unparalleled and the prose was excellent without being overwrought, enough to describe stuff concisely and viscerally in a way that suits body horror. but I feel like I gotta dock points for the weird fatphobia, it was hard to tell if it was the MC or author who was repulsed or what purpose that served

not a book I'd easily recommend? it's probably the first time I've read something with a trigger warning list the length of my arm. you're like "that was amazing! but did I like it? I have no idea!" I don't mind open endings, either, and I'm still processing how I felt, but I do wish we'd gotten a bit more out of that as well.

Wow, this is not for the faint of heart! One of the most horrific horror stories I’ve read! I adore deep sea horror, and this one was incredibly creepy and addicting.

Vivid descriptions, Cutter’s style is easy to follow but not for the faint of heart. If you enjoy horror with body horror and crippling claustrophobia, you might enjoy.

This was really good and terrifying until somewhere close to the end where it crossed the line into so absurd it's literally hilarious. Like I don't even know what to say. At some point, maybe around 75%, I've honestly forgotten, it just started to go off the rails.

  • Clayton's hand falling off like a lizard's tail and groping Luke.
  • That moment when the scientist guy described his raging boner and mentioned how even his kinky ex couldn't make him that hard.
  • The hand then sprouting another 7 hands and then spider scuttling over to a keypad and opening a door.
  • Pretty much everything involving the bees.
  • Clayton having an Einstein poster to cover up the hole.
  • Luke dragging Clayton's unconscious body through a tunnel while being chased by a giant maggot with the heads of his mother, ex-wife, and missing son.
  • Toy basically being flattened by the research station and 8 miles worth of water, except slowly.
  • The two dogs being fused together and sucked through a supernatural sparkly goo hole while Luke cried his eyes out.

I literally just laughed at these moments.

This was the most gripping, intense, horrifying book I have ever read. Well done, Nick Cutter.

This book is a 5 star read until literally the last… 20 pages? Which is just really typical for Nick Cutter, unfortunately. I LOVE his plots and I LOVE his books and they’re nauseating and gut wrenching, and then the last 20 pages rolls around and totally ruins it. The plot gets lost by whatever weird crock shit he’s come up with, overexplaining things to the point where they’re no longer scary, and the ending will just leave you unsatisfied. I am just not ever impressed with how his books end — he spoon feeds you the answer instead of just leaving you with dread.

Atmospheric and horrifying with visceral descriptions that will often leave you feeling sick and asking yourself “why?!”. I enjoyed the book but mainly was let down by the ending which  felt unsatisfying and sudden. I felt as though there were a number of loose ends that were never tied up, and though likely a narrative choice, I was just left frustrated and wanting answers.

The ‘Gets could have pretty much been completely removed from this book and would have made no impact on the plot or otherwise, it very much feels like a wasted aspect of the plot
