This was so……. odd? I can’t tell if I actually enjoyed this experience. It never veered fully into scary, except maybe at the beginning, with the explanation of the ‘Gets - but mainly because any dementia-related illness is inherently horrific. Definitely more psychological horror than anything else. I’m not sure if it really reached the heights it could have - but I do love an underwater/outer space location as a setting for a horror story, so it got points with me solely based off of that. Unfortunately, the setting had no impact on the story whatsoever so that was extremely disappointing.
If you like Stephen King’s ramblings to expand on a character’s extremely tragic backstory, intermixed with your horror elements, you may particularly enjoy this.

The 3-phrase vibe review:

First, the fatphobia in this book is absolutely in your face every single chapter. Yes we get it. His mother is fat and arguably a worse monster than the “aliens” down deep. I’m just so tired of evil being depicted as fat. That actually soured the book for me as a whole.  I think I could have enjoyed it if it were for the massive amount of fatphobia.

The writing itself was exquisite and despairing but the level of fatphobia left this book down as deep as the Trieste.

Hard to believe this was written by the same author as The Troop. This was so boring. No sense of dread. The killer dementia plague just vanished when that was probably more of a terrifying concept than being underwater and hearing things. Did I mention they’re underwater? Because they’re underwater. It also really wasn't shy with its references - literally quoting them sometimes. The ending may as well have been that it was all a dream, would've made more sense.

I found out that the dog dies a horrible death unnecessarily. Nick Cutter includes a gruesome animal death in every book, and I've only ever seen it further the plot once.
