2.5 stars. A few plot points were weird and not really wrapped up...

2.5 stars Reasonably standard contemporary romance with some amusing bits but no-where near as many as it thinks it has. Some people will love the humor, for me it felt like it was trying too hard to be funny which actually made it a little annoying. I did like how once Mercy & Alden were together (and that happened pretty damn quick) they stayed together even when they were annoyed with each other or arguing. I was annoyed on Alden’s behalf by Alice’s interfering ‘matchmaking’ he has said he doesn’t want to be set up but she just ignores him. That is so disrespectful so I was particularly annoyed that
Spoiler Mercy was actually who Alice sent. And the ridiculous round about way that she ended up exactly where Alice intended to send her simply by chance really annoyed me. The entire story would have been better with no Alice and them just meeting by chance
Spoiler . I also felt sorry for poor Alden having to deal with obnoxious old Lady Sybil, and then all his troubles with the house! It is a good thing he had Mercy to comfort him.

I love Mercy. So far she's my favorite heroine from Katie MacAlister. It is also nice to revisit with some old characters in the form of the Hard Days Knights.

As per usual Katie has written a funny enjoyable read. Only thing that would have made it better was being able to read without having to stop for work.

Part of the appeal of the MacAlister books (at least for me) is that they are fast, fun, and fluffy. This series tips it a little too far beyond my ability to suspend disbelief but it's still fun.
In this book, it's Alden Ainsley's turn to find his true love (helped along by his sister-in-law). At least, that's what his brother warns him. It seems SIL has invited an old school friend of hers to Alden's newly acquired property to help him... well, straighten it out. It seems the property is in shambles. AND the previous occupant has made it a stipulation that she is to remain on the property until her death. Oh, and she rented the lands to a knight reenactment group but neglected to tell Alden that.
It's a good thing he has the distraction of Mercedes "Mercy" Starling. Mercy started the book as a nanny for some spoiled children. But when her job falls through, she takes the chance offered to her by another girl to be a general dogsbody for the reenactment group. And it's a good thing she's there, because she's the only one who can seem to get through to Alden. And he's going to need help since it seems that someone is deliberately sabatoging the house.

All the right elements--excellent banter, a goofy plot, medieval reenactors--but it ended up being pretty dull. It was so predictable it was almost hard to finish, and there was virtually no tension. I did think the heroine was adorable, though. Kind of meh overall.
