I meant to write this review when I finished the book awhile ago but I haven't been on social media much for a bit. Let's start with the positives! I enjoyed how thought provoking the story was. It was nice to see everyone's perspectives. I think this story is a great exploration on grief and how it effects everyone involved in many different ways. I also enjoyed that the tone of each person's chapters really dived into their mind and I felt as if I was reading in their voice. Now for the parts I didn't like so much. I felt during certain chapters the pacing was inconsistent. Some chapters I would start out excited to read and then it would hit a wall for me and I felt like I had a hard time finishing a couple of times. Sexual content isn't a huge component of this book, but it is there, and I usually don't mind a small but of that in my books but something about the way these encounters were written was a bit awkward for me. I also thought some of the interactions between people were a bit unnatural. I do recommend giving this book a read however it is not something I would recommend to every single person. This is very much a niche read and I feel there is a very specific type of reader that would be into this. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I did have mixed feelings during portions of the book which contributed to my mixed review.

I ended up feeling very meh about this book. Joseph's POV was entirely unnecessary, and many of the characters felt underdeveloped. The setting change mid-book also seemed unnecessary.
Also, I have a strong stomach, but apparently I can't deal with rampant
pet death
. I also couldn't stand tiny M, when he was
a freaking lung with a tail! Lung tissue is spongy and gross, so this alone made me want to gag. And then he balloons like a wood tick when he eats his victims. Nope.

I did like getting M's POV at the end, but the conclusion did not ultimately leave me satisfied.

a beautiful meditation on grief and how suffocating blending into social norm can be... eddings project 2024 you will always be famous.

--- vague spoilers ahead

once M begins to develop into an adult and his urges bleed into his sexual relationships, the writing reaches a level of gruesome that feels intrusive in a way that you can't look away. his journey from a lung into M/Monstrilio is tragic and beautiful. each stage of his life is essential to understanding both him and the grief felt by his parents.

because this is part of my grant project, i've grown to be a magos defender, or at least a magos sympathizer. she didn't understand her grief at the time. the lung became hers. she protected it and nurtured it until it grew. she was never given an avenue to properly grieve, she just added fantasy into her life to avoid the brutal reality she was face with.

I loved the concept but not the execution. Every other page was either someone having sex or drinking. No veins of hope and no focus on grief at all. Just gruesome. Disappointed.

Monstrilio did not disappoint.
A reflection of the way that grief can be a feral and living thing - growing and changing, shrinking and morphing, sometimes recognizable and “manageable” while other times bringing shock and pain to those around you, all depending on the bearer and their processing. I couldn’t put it down.
This debut novel was gripping, but it was inconsistently paced in a way that impacted how I connected to each of the main characters, especially outside of their POV section. The different perspectives were all incredibly unique and viscerally illustrative, leaving me with strong feelings about all of the main characters including Uncle Luke and Peter. The different POVs changed how I saw each character, showing how the internal and external perspectives of a person can be so different, and key to the whole picture of that person.
I felt a slight disconnect and lack of fulfillment from the story by the end of the book, keeping me from rating it 5 ⭐️, while simultaneously being another great metaphor for grief and how it feels to “move on”.
