Monstrilio is told from several key characters' perspectives in sequential order. The story is about a piece of lung that grows and transforms into a humanoid meat-thirsty son. (There are no "scary" parts in my opinion, but should have CW regardless. ) More than that, its about grief. How grief tests the boundaries and ties. It shows up as varied as each character is unique... no right way, just muddling through. I found the actual character, Monstrilio as a literal representation of each characters' grief- how they accepted it or tried to change it so it fit into a tidy box. How they observed it, reacted to it, fed it or cared for it... it had a direct correlation to that character's journey in grieving. There was no escaping it, although they tried.
There are other themes present, too- I would suggest any sort of "othering" that occurs and the intersectionality. What does it mean to be unconventional? Not fit into social norms?
On the surface, its Frankenstinian. But below the skin are stories on how grief shapes us and we shape it. What a marvelous book and has surprised me in the best way.

what an opening for a book! and what an ending! strange concept but it's so interesting and unbelievably sad,,, well worth a read I think ! I'm glad I finally got to it
