Although this wasn't a favorite, I love how Lily King writes and will read anything by her! I didn't expect a book about anthropologists to be full of so much emotion and tension, but I was wrong.

King’s writing is great, but the characters and plot were lacking for me in this one.

This book felt extremely real to me and I quickly became invested in the story. However, I found the plot underdeveloped and rushed. The book was only around 250 pages but King could have easily doubled that for a much more fulfilling story. Based on its synopsis, I expected much more to come out of both the

love triangle and the flute plot lines.

It took until the last fraction of the book for my mind to really tune into it. Otherwise I found this overwhelmingly boring. It’s heavy on anthropology details, whereas I’d have enjoyed this more if it focused more on the emotions and depth of the characters. It ended with a bit of a heart punch. I wish the whole book had felt that way.
