This was recommended to me, with the caveat that I shouldn't read anything about it so I wouldn't come across any spoilers. Well, I read it, and I wasn't as impressed as I expected to be. I'm not even sure I would say there was much to spoil... yes, we didn't know the hows or whys or exactly what the kids were, but I expected it to pretty much be something along those lines, having read plenty of dystopian fiction.
Anyway, it was the gory details that really got to me. I don't go in for gross description, and the novelty in how the story developed wasn't enough to overcome my aversion to the yucky bits.

Part of me wants to give this one star for refusing to use the word zombie in what is clearly a zombie novel. This becomes apparent within like ten pages, so it's just stupid to keep calling the zombies things like 'hungries.'
Anyrate, despite being a bit long for what it's doing, I think this novel is pretty great. It's thrilling and sometimes pretty creepy, and it plays with some big ideas. I really dig the evolution of zombies that this novel represents.
But, yeah, not a whole lot to say. It's a zombie novel that is pretty much like every other zombie movie or book, except for a few key components. And those key components do make quite a bit of difference.
Probably at least 100 pages too long though.
