A fabulous read that kept up a strong pace without being relentless. Very enjoyable, although perhaps not the book to read at an all-day doctor appointment….
I did not necessarily find this a genre-breaking masterpiece, however: it didn’t veer SO far from a traditional horror story for me to consider it as such, despite being a very strong and enjoyable book in its own right. I do feel like a number of reviews built it past where it needed to be hyped, but personal recs convinced me to read and I’m glad I did.
The reveals and twists felt both inevitable and appropriate, which is always appreciated in a horror / survival type story. Well paced and plotted. I look forward to watching the movie.

A book about zombies that doesn’t really bring anything new to the table.
Enjoyable and with a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming.
Gostei muitíssimo desse livro! Ele é bem construído, a história é muito bem narrada, tem ação, emoção e um final inesperado (pelo menos pra mim), mas o que me fez gostar bastante dele foi Melanie. Sua inteligência e seu carinho pela professora me conquistaram! Que menina fofa!!!

É um livro típico de zumbi: tem a busca pela cura e todos fazendo o possível para se manterem vivos. A diferença é que Melanie, mesmo sendo uma faminta, acaba se afeiçoando à professora. A base em que ela fica é atacada e alguns personagens partem para outra cidade para encontrar outros humanos não infectados. Não dá certo. Não há outros humanos e Melanie chega à conclusão, após análise dos estudos da Dra. Caldwell (pesquisadora responsável) que isso não tem cura, que a doença tem que seguir um curso normal. As crianças famintas/zumbis, ainda que infectadas possuem o sentimento de lealdade e pertencimento à família, podem mudar a situação, mas só no futuro. A professora, Justineau, é a única não infectada sobrevivente e ensinará às crianças o que sabe.
''Eu vou voltar. Vou cuidar de você'. Justineau agora entende o que isso significa. Como vai viver e o que ela será. E ri através de lágrimas sufocantes com a justiça disto. Nada é esquecido e tudo está pago.'

What a fantastic book. Turns the genre on its head while creating an entirely believable aftermath to an apocalyptic event. It's not always true with these sort of books that one says "that's how things would probably turn out if this happened." But in this case, it was quite "true." Almost nothing in this book felt inauthentic, writerly or forced.
