3.5 stars

When I started this book the only thing I knew about it was that it's a zombie apocalypse story. And I'm so happy that I went into it almost completely unaware of the plot.

This was such a unique zombie story. The setup of the first part took me completely by surprise and from that point on I felt like I never fully knew where the story was taking me. Melanie, our main character is such a charming little kid that the book had me tearing up multiple times because of her and the things she had to go through. But the story never feels unnecessary cruel. The rest of the main characters feel completely unique and while not all of them are exactly sympathetic, it's easy to understand where they're coming from, and honestly I love that none of the characters are good or evil, they just feel human.

Then there's the ending, and without spoiling anything I really have to say it might be my favourite book ending in a while. I feel like sometimes books really struggle with landing those last few pages. The story might be great but then the ending feels off or as if the author was rushing it. This was the opposite of that, it was beautiful and heartbreaking and dark or hopeful depending how you look at it. One thing it was for sure was masterful.

Maybe 2.5 if I’m feeling generous

Went into this completely blind. Was told that it was a great post-apocalyptic book.

It was “just ok”. The zombie thing has been done to death, not enough new in this to make it special.

I've grown extremely bored with the zombie genre, but damn ... this book breaths new life into a truly dead genre!

Wow. What took me so long to read this? This was spectacular. It brought to mind Justin Cronin's The Passage - a similar situation, and the same emotional intensity and psychological depth, with a little girl at the center of it all. Another truly literary riff on the zombie theme and what it means to be human. Outstanding writing, character development, plotting, suspense... its got it all. Highly, highly recommended for adults and teens.
My copy was a Kindle ARC from NetGalley.
