Boring, cliche-ridden, with mostly unlikable characters.
I'm not sure why people are so excited about this one. I found the characters to be one-dimensional and the plot wasn't that engaging.
I normally shy away from anything classed as horror, but this came recommended and there was only one part (Gallagher's death) that I had to skip over wholesale. There's a lot packed into this book, not only action and suspense but also questions about ethics, life purpose, and what love can and cannot conquer. There are certain elements that can't help but be similar to other post-apocalyptic novels, but the ending was fascinating and unique. If you're willing to slog through some terror and gore (or skip parts), I definitely recommend it.
I picked up The Girl with All the Gifts with pretty high expectations, having seen it on several 'Best of' lists, and I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed. Yes, The Girl with All the Gifts is technically a zombie novel, but don't let that put you off! I too was skeptical at first, but it is such a different take on the overtired zombie apocalypse scenario that it feels brand new. It hits hard on themes of identity, humanity, empathy, and morality, and the characters are wonderfully well-rounded, with all the faults and little quirks of real people. Would definitely recommend to fans of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic fiction.

literally just put this down , read it over a weekend and was super enraptured with it. But
At first glance, I was kind of frustrated with dumb and illogical some of the characters actions seemed to be. Their motivations are sort of justified ( ms J, Gallagher) but just didn’t quite land for me. The characters who had survived or been born into a fungal apocalypse seemed a bit sentimental for me, but I know that’s part of what the book was getting at. Idk. Just first thoughts and no one will read this. It was an absolutely killer read tho and really scraps the apocalyptic itch

Loved this one. Picked it up on a recommendation, didn't know anything about it and appreciated going in with no expectations. I don't want to give anything away, but thought this was a new take on a popular dystopian genre. Similar themes to "I Am Legend" - who is hero and who is villain?
...and that's how you go from literally knowing nothing about the book (besides the title) to finishing it within 28 hours. intriguing!
