Really interesting. Different take on the whole zombie scene, which I found intriguing. Definitely worth every moment I spent devouring this from cover to cover.
The first half of the novel was gripping and intriguing when everything was set in the bunker and there was a bit of mystery. I liked Melanie, she felt well-written and like a real child although it was fairly obvious what she was. I didn't like any of the other characters and although there was an attempt to flesh them out I don't think they were nearly as well drawn as Melanie. I certainly didn't care whether they lived or died.
The second half of the book became the usual wander through a zombie-filled post-apocalyptic wilderness, looking for food, water & shelter. There were a few too many coincidences for my liking - particularly finding the giant tank-bus seemed very convenient.
Overall, there was some interesting exploration of good and evil, particularly with the evil doctor going to any length to find a cure, but even though the author tried to rehabilitate the military-guy and the teacher's characters I couldn't forgive either of them for the part they played in and I was pretty happy to see them all by the end.

The only thing I knew about this book before I bought it was what I read on the back cover. If that's all you want to know (and that may be the best way to read it), then stop here. This won't have spoilers about the plot but it'll definitely share information that, while perhaps widely known in general, may still be a surprise to you. As for me, I liked reading this without knowing anything. Last warning.
It wasn't until later, when I got the book home that I realized it was a zombie thing. UGH! So boring. I'm so over zombies. Guess I failed to interpret the part about "biting" on the back cover, or I wouldn't have bought it. And yet, what a happy accident.
This turned out to be not-a-zombie book. It's a creative twist on an over-told story that I quite thoroughly enjoyed.
Why we love books: character, story, writing style, creativity, compelling themes, surprise, fun, thought-provoking ideas...
This book had all of those. How do you fall in love with a zombie? Turn it into a 10 year old girl. How do you tell an interesting story about something so so so done? You tell a different story.
There were some slow parts in the middle that was more traditional hacker/slasher stuff which wasn't my favorite. But overall this was a really enjoyable read that pulls you through the story, makes you care, and ultimately delivers. I can forgive some mild dullness of the already-done variety because it was bookended so beautifully by the setup and the punchline. Throw in some fraught relationships, a little bit of apocalyptic science, and you've got a worthy read.
