Wow this book was such a surprise for me.

I came across it looking for another dark romance and the premise sounded interesting.

Abigail is a woman who has had nightmares of a monster chasing her since she was a child. But over the years the monster from her nightmares turned into a man chasing her and instead of scaring her, these nightmares started to make her feel excited and needy for a dark fantasy. A fantasy of a man who would be her monster, who she would run from and who would chase her down. In case that isn’t clear enough, it’s a rape fantasy. Sure, it’s a dark fantasy, but not an entirely uncommon one.

In an effort to bring her fantasy to life she searches for her monster, and after posting a profile on a sex connections website she meets Phoenix/Leo. He’s familiar with her type of fantasy because he’s played that role of a monster for a girlfriend in the past.

They both are broken and begin looking to each other to not only fulfill their fantasies, but to put the pieces of their lives back together after past tragedies have left them shattered.

So I can’t say I’ve read a rape fantasy book before. This one surprised me because I didn’t know what to expect. I definitely didn’t expect a book with so much heart and soul.

I especially didn’t expect to find a special kind of intimacy between Leo and Abigail because of him giving her this fantasy. Of fulfilling this role of being “her monster”. There is a certain level of trust that would need to form between two people who are playing out a fantasy like this, and Leo more than earns Abigail’s trust. And there was a strange kind of connection and bond that these two formed because they both found themselves caught up in a taboo fantasy that the world may not understand, but they understood each other and it was beautiful in a dark and twisted kind of way.

And I loved Leo. He’s dark and brooding and sexy, but he’s also real. He has a real life apart from the role he plays with Abigail. I found it really fascinating how he slipped into that role and when he was playing Abigail’s monster he actually sounded like a different person (in a good way, I mean, like he was really getting into the fantasy). And I found that really fascinating and exciting.

And for the record there isn’t any actual non-consensual sex in this book. There is a simulated rape play which could definitely be a trigger for some, but no actual rape. Abigail is totes into it. 100% so.

I enjoyed this one a lot. I especially loved Leo. And the idea of a man that is willing to help you fulfill even your darkest fantasies is pretty hot in my opinion. It’s not even that it’s a rape fantasy specifically that makes it hot, it’s that he’s there to be whatever Abigail needs (whether that’s a date to a company barbecue, or a late night run from her monster). That’s what’s hot. Giving her everything she needs. And he does that for her. He gives her everything. So much so.

I can definitely see myself reading this one again down the road just so I can meet Leo in a dark alley again one day. ;)

P.S. Even though it’s all consensual, I wouldn’t recommend this book for anyone with any rape triggers. No actual rape or abuse takes place. But lots of simulation and rough sex which might be a trigger.

6 MONTH UPDATE: Since reading this book about six months ago or so, I have read many other con-non-con books and I can honestly say this is one of the best of the best when it comes to that particular taboo. If you’re interested in reading a book with that, definitely check this one out.
adventurous challenging dark emotional mysterious tense

Redeemed itself towards the end but man the beginning was hard to get through.

2 strangers with a tragic past met & promise for 1 night wild together. I love the chase and it was hot, just not that amazing. It was okay, I felt the story could be a lot more depth to it, moving too fast and suddenly they’re boyfriend and gf.

This was so dark and beautiful, in the most erotic way possible.

Was it hot and kinky? Yes. Was it smutty and sexy? Also yes. But what really set this apart from any other smutty and kinky story I've read so far, is the depth and raw emotion that Jade West managed to infuse within the pages.

Ultimately, at its very core, this is a story about grief. Grieving love lost, and grieving the promise of a future that never came to be.

Abigail and Leo find each other in darkness and pain. They need it to feel something, anything. And showing each other the darkest parts of themselves is what ultimately opens them up to loving again and accepting love in return.

Such a thrilling and suspenseful read! Definitely not for the faint of heart, though. If you are at all hesitant when it comes to CNC, then I would advise you to try another book, because that is literally how Abigail and Leo's relationship came to be. However, if you are comfortable with CNC and darker topics, then I can't recommend this enough!

Second time reading this one and i still love it!!

Holy Crap! This book! Edge of my seat the whole time! Ik this is a "Romance" book but it has lots of thrill to be a thriller! And DIRTY SPICE, lots of that. Def a good book

I honestly have no idea how I feel about this book tbh. I thought it was a interesting concept with the whole chase and her being bait ,but I fear there wasn't really much to it. I thought there would be more about the ex boyfriend and her leaving her family and friends ,but there wasn't. Not even a convo with her mom. Then the whole Marina situation could have been so much more interesting ,but for me it fell flat. I think that it all became predictable and I wasn't interested in it anymore. For most of the book I had no idea how old his son was and tbh idk if that was me or the author tho LMFAOOO. Overall this was a good read and I'd recommend it for this type of book ,but other than that....ehhhh

Man alive

The cover completely had me one clicking this one. I didn't read the blurb or have any idea what it was about when I went in and honestly it worked out wonderfully. It's not something I usually do, but the gamble paid off.

I could not put this one down. Bait is suspenseful and sexy. I wouldn't say it's dark more darkish but oh so good. I couldn't get enough of Phoenix and Abigail. What was supposed to be a one time thing turned into something they couldn't stop craving.

Bait is written in such a way that has you flying through the pages to find out what happened and who did what. Fantastic read!
