Please Look After Mom, a South Korean novel where this family's mother goes missing. A very sad book about the family now looking at the mother as a person outside of her role as mother and wife, and their regrets over not appreciating their time with her. How she kept the family going single handedly, even during a time where food was sparse, and where she had to make a lot of sacrifices.

I decided to read this right now because it's my mum's birthday tomorrow and it really nails my thoughts and feelings of grief. I wonder about my mum as a person, the parts of her I never got to know, my regrets (maybe I should've done this more, maybe I should've been less irritable).

Overall, it's a lovely novel that tugs at your heart and makes you think of your parents as a person that has lived many lives as well as appreciating their complexities.

“I especially don't know where her strength came from. Think about it. Mom did things that one person couldn't do by herself.”

It’s true, Please Look After Your Mother will make you want to give the longest hug to your mother right after you’ve finished it. Mothers sacrificed so much for us so cherish them before they leave this world

First of all, I thought this was going to be more of a mystery/suspense novel about a mother who was leading a double life and willingly vanished to pursue her other life, which was totally not the case. Once I reached the half point I realized I needed some mental preparation to continue reading this book. Secondly, I would rate this much higher (prob a 5) if it weren’t for the second person narrative. The issue isn’t with the second person narration itself but with the execution. This Thing Between Us handles it really well, I wasn’t pulled out of the story even once. Unfortunately, in this case, the narration felt jarring and disjointed. Instead of enhancing the emotional weight, it created a disconnect that grew increasingly frustrating. By the end, that frustration overshadowed any sadness the story might have evoked, leaving me more disappointed than moved.
