I didn’t really enjoy this one. I think it was just personal preference of me not enjoying short stories. This was my first short story and I just don’t think they are for me, I found that the ending finished rather abruptly and it was quite an unsatisfying ending. I definitely feel like for thrillers I need more detail

I was recommended this book by Amazon since I love the Quick Reads charity.

The writing is easy to follow, I did gasp at one point but the ending was disappointing. I wanted a detail account of her Blackout.

You wake up in a strange room, abroad in a city you’ve never visited before. You have no money, passport, or phone. And there is no sign of your baby. What do you do?

Wow. For a Quick Read, this blew me away. I do like a mystery, and this certainly delivered. Moreover, as I’ve ranted about Quick Reads before, this was the right length for the story, and I think any more could have been too tantalising and would have had to be more complex!

The characters were all very well fleshed out and inventive, and I liked the flashbacks, which were also done in different text which was a very good aesthetic touch. Sophie’s character was so unreliable at the start, it was great, because you only realised that at the end.

Getting onto the actual plot, this was very well thought out and I didn’t guess it until the end (obviously some other people, especially avid readers of mystery, probably would. I’m just very unobservant too!). As I’ve said, it fitted the length of the novella and I liked how it concluded – kind of open and leaving room for the conclusion to come afterwards (which was a rather obvious conclusion so the author didn’t have to summarise it… and she didn’t!).

Overall, I really enjoyed this Quick Read and I highly recommend it. I’ll be looking for more of Barr’s work to read in the future because I really enjoyed her peppy style of writing, the realism of her characters, and the fact that this plot worked so well so I’m hoping it would in the rest of her novels too!
