Lili and her Nai Nai are excitedly making baos for a communal apartment dinner. While preparing the food, they realize they are missing an ingredient, so Lili visits another apartment dweller to find what they need. Many cooks in the apartment are missing ingredients, but through generosity and community spirit, people get the ingredients they need. In the end, everyone shares a delicious meal with different cultural varieties of dumplings.

A very sweet story about food and community.

This is the kind of picture book I wish I’d had as a kid growing up.
Lili is making bao with her Nai Nai who realizes she’s out of cabbage and asks Lili to run up to Babcia’s apartment to borrow some. And so begins Lili’s trek up and down the stairs in her building to visit all the grandmas who are making various types of dumplings - from Abuela’s tamales to Babcia’s pierogis, Granma’s beef patties to Nonna’s ravioli and Teta’s fatayer.
It’s a beautifully illustrated book about culture and community and includes a recipe for Chinese bao at the end.

Lili is so excited when her Nai Nai wants her to make baos, she loves the dumplings and making them with her. Only they out of cabbage - a necessary ingredient! Her Nai Nai sends her to Babcia to see if she has any they can use. With the elevator out of order, Lili soon is running the stairs as other grandmothers realize they are missing a key ingredient for something they need to make their dish. So so much to love about this adorable book as Lili runs the stairs and as readers, we discover the many different kinds of dumplings with a delightful surprise at the end. With specific directions and illustrations, readers can also make their own baos - I just wish the other dumpling recipes were also included! A pure delight - but do not read on an empty stomach!
