Some beautiful sentences and ideas. At moments, I felt totally immersed in his world and mentality. Overall, very hard to work past the self-aggrandizing style… but being a memoir, I guess he has the license to frame his look back at his life as he wished.

Hard to give it fair review/ranking since it's an unfinished book. A quick read and I liked the tone and style of the writing.

There was some really well-done prose in this book, but it was mostly memories of hookups and shoulder rubbing (semi) famous authors. From reading other reviews, it sounds like the author held back a lot of perspective that would have added interest to the memoir.

A nostalgic - sometimes to a fault - memoir of Greenwich Village that reflects Broyard's prejudices without dismissing the people he encounters either. Broyard also passed as white as an adult despite being Black, which really changes the context of certain lines and moments, especially his reluctance to bring his parents anywhere near his home.
Graphic: Terminal illness, Violence, and Sexual content
Moderate: Racism

This was unlike anything (memoir or otherwise) that I had ever read but I loved doing so whilst actually staying in Greenwich Village this year. A captivating snapshot of a different time in a truly unique place.
