Chosen for the specific challenge of reading a "book that's at least 100 years older than you", this surprised me in a good way.
Part history lesson, part geography lesson - I enjoyed following the prim and proper Phileas Fogg, as he traipses across the globe to win an impossible gentlemen's wager. Add in a dogged detective determined to get his man by any means possible and a loyal, overzealous manservant, and you've got quite the zany adventure. Though they face obstacle after obstacle in the spirit of stiff British mannerisms, this was still fun, keeping my interest throughout. It even had a bit of romance to it as well!
Truly, I really couldn't ask for more from a book as old as this ;)

Theme(s): travel

Summary: Phileas Fogg, a very logical and literal man, is bet that he can't travel around the world in exactly 80 days (the amount of time it is thought to take according to a local newspaper article). He takes on the challenge, hires a valet, Passepartout, to accompany him, and sets off. At the same time, a large amount of money is stolen from a London bank, and the detective, Mr. Fix, is sure it must have been done by Mr. Fogg. He immediately sets off to follow him on his journey around the globe, determined to catch the alleged thief.
Review: I liked this book better than expected. I'm never sure when I pick up a classic how well I'll understand or like it. This one was pleasantly surprising. I read it slowly over time, but it was easy to follow along. The characters were funny and not complex. I thought this was an enjoyable children's story more than a work of art.

I found this one to be a nice ride and I enjoyed the interactions with the main characters. The ending of the story was a satisfying one too.
