A wonderful read with excellent characters and great descriptions. This book is one hell of an adventure and it has become one of my all time favourite books. I will be checking out other works of Jules Verne for sure.

I approached Around the World with more than a little trepidation, but I needn't have worried. Neither overstuffed like [b:Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea|33507|Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Extraordinary Voyages, #6)|Jules Verne|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1345271681s/33507.jpg|1112418] nor under-dramatized like [b:The Mysterious Island|32831|The Mysterious Island |Jules Verne|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1388278046s/32831.jpg|1167706], Verne manages a brisk book of "just the good parts" chronicling a round-the-world race against the clock. The book doesn't suffer from the what now sounds like a leisurely circumnavigation, and it is largely a group of contained challenges set around the world, all inevitably overcome by protagonist Fogg.

The unexpected pleasure of this book is Fogg's valet Passepartout, who may have experienced the worst first-day-at-a-new-job ever. Fogg is perfectly capable of his voyage unencumbered, and in fact has little actual use for Passepartout's services throughout, leaving him free to stumble from misadventure to misadventure throughout this brief book. He's the most human of the characters and the most rounded, and although Verne again stacks the deck dramatically by giving him a convenient backstory/skill set, I did find myself actually rooting for him, and wondering how he'd get out of the impossible situations in which he was thrust.

By no means a difficult read, and surprisingly light on the casual racism that plagues so many books of this era. The wonders of the world and its many cultures are presented with little judgment. It was a surprisingly fun read, after being let down by Verne's other "classic" tales.
