To be honest, I loved the beginning. However, I think it was pretty much the same after all. I love when people give a lot of details while writing, but this time it felt different, I just didn’t like it.
Phileas Fogg is an extraordinary man. He is rarely daunted by the potholes in his way and equipped with a steadfast determination, attains what he so wishes. During a game of whist, a casual conversation turns to a challenge which sends Mr. Fogg on an adventure around the world within eighty days. Needless to say, his carefully planned trip doesn’t come to pass without trouble. A grave misunderstanding and treacherous weathers question the probability of him winning the wager. Around The World in Eighty Days is a quick, delightful read of Mr. Fogg and his companion’s experiences in changing regions and clime.
There appears to be many editions of this text, and I happened to pick a short abridged version. Usually I wouldn’t read abridged versions of classics but keeping in mind, the plot of this novel, I feel that the 120 paged edition was more appropriate and not draggy. It is fun enough that you are constantly wondering if Mr. Fogg’s overconfidence would cost him dearly. Afterall twenty thousand pounds for a bet is far too much. The protagonist is shown to be extremely stiff, lacking the expression of basic emotions which make us human. He seems not only detached from his surroundings but also very mechanical in his mien. Along the way, he makes certain acquaintances who stick with him till the end. Its a wonder how they dealt with his personality. His relationship with one such acquaintance, his counterpart to be precise, sounded flaky, perhaps because of the absence of any history or sound reason. Passepartout, his servant, is a fickle character, who only comes to his senses towards the end. There are a few cultural references (of India) that I found easier to understand. The end was fitting to some extent, not very apparent/obvious hence a good way to wrap up the text. The writing too was good, characteristic of classics. I enjoyed it but didn’t absolutely love it. Will definitely try something else by Jules Verne.

Özellikle macera ve aksiyonu bol bir romandı ki 1874 yılında Yazıldığı düşünüldüğünde o zamanlar için oldukça başarılı bir roman . Karakterlerin yaşadığı değişik engellerle seyehatin aksaklığa uğraması ve fix ile ana karakterler arasında kedinin fare kovalama şeklinde ilerlemesi romanı daha macera dolu aynı zamanda aksiyonlu kılmış.
Karakterleri beğendim.Philaes Foggun önüne çıkan her aksaklıkta soğukkanlı olması ve istifini bozmaması ve görevini tam zamanında yerine getireceği inancıyla birlikte gittiği yerlerde insanlara yardım etmek için bu zamanını riske atması onu daha kompleks bir karakter yapmış . Dürüst bir karakter olmasına rağmen Fix’in kitabın sonuna kadar Fogg’un hırsız olmasından şüphelenmesi , her aksaklıkta görevi tamamlamama uğruna harcadığı paralar okuyucuda da aynı şekilde şüphe uyandırdığına inanıyorum bu da kitaba farklı bir renk katmış.
Tek beğenmediğim Kitabın Mizah yönünü her ne kadar uşak karşılasa da Fixin ona afyon vererek dilini bile bilmediği bir ülkede parasız aç susuz bırakmasını yine de uşağın bunu takiben efendisine hiçbir şey söylemeden romanın sonuna kadar hala Fix’n kimliğini saklaması biraz kitabın sonunda sürpriz yaratmak için yapılmış bir şey gibi geldi, efendisine bu kadar sadık bir karakter için gerçekçi değildi.
Polis hafiyesi Fix bile ana karakterlere karşı bir karakter olarak başlayıp sonlara doğru onların yandaşı haline gelmesi hoş bir detaydı,son bölüme kadar yanlarında olacağını düşünmeme rağmen son anda tutuklamaya karar vermesi benim için de beklenmedik oldu.
Bunun dışında Doğudan Batıya bir gün kazanmış olmaları okurken bana da sürpriz oldu.
Macera dolu ,güzel vakit geçirebilmek için seçilebilecek bir kitap ve özellikle çocukların daha çok sevebileceğine inanıyorum.

Funny how they went to so many places that I recently visited. Singapore, Formosa, Yokohama mainly. Surprisingly little seems to have changed since then (at least from what is written)
Jules Verne's classic which, I have to say, I could not help but think of the 80's cartoon while reading.
In case you've been living in a cave: late 19th century (1870s, I think) adventure, in which Phileas (or Willie, in the cartoon) Fogg makes a bet that he can travel around the world in 80 days - it's all there in the title! - accompanied by his valet Passepartout.
Set aside the colonialism of the time, the (sometimes) cringe-worthy racial stereotypes, and just enjoy the travel! Mind, there's no hot-air balloons involved ...

Aside from all the insensitive parts (sexism, racism, xenophobia and probably other bad things) there is something fun and charming about the whole plot; which kept me reading and enjoying this short book.
Passporteut and Fix were the characters I preferred to read, seeing Fix's conviction waiver and his growing uncomfortableness with job was interesting. And Passporteut's insane individual escapades were great, a bumbling and loyal servant on a globe trotting adventure is a lot of fun for me; him leaving Shanghai, his dynamic with Fix and his activities in Japan to name a few moments.
Fogg I never liked, his stoicism never really crumbles into an interesting driving force for the adventure. The obvious fact that he wasn't a bank robber took something away from him that I thought (early on) would be a part of the story. Coupling this with him solving every problem with money and not much else and I didn't find him to be the great man all the other characters see him as. Also he deducted the gas costs from Passporteut at the end, what a d***head.
Oldest book I have ever read, I think, and for that I did find it interesting; but again very offensive by modern standards.
