3.34 AVERAGE

An average crime thriller.

This is okay, at best. There are severe pacing issues, but the plot from a bird's eye view is actually good. So the execution could have been better. Mostly enjoyable, somewhat. Read this if you have nothing else to read.

Kept me wondering

This book was slower and not quite as dramatic as some thrillers. It kept me guessing and wondering where it was leading and who the suspects really were. I enjoyed it.

3.75 I listened to this book on audio and enjoyed the narration. I definitely will read more by Nicci French in the future.

So readable, clever plotting.

I’m trying to read more new to me authors so I decided to give Nicci French (a husband and wife duo) a try and I was not disappointed. This books starts out with Ellie getting that dreaded knock at the door from officers letting her know her husband has died in an accident. As if that’s not devastating enough she’s told he wasn’t alone. He was with a woman.

I loved that the book dove right in and it made me invested from page one in the story. Ellie was a determined character and I liked that about her. She refused to believe the worst in her husband despite all signs pointing that way. The first person narrative worked well for this story as I felt I was able to really feel everything Ellie was feeling. Her grief, her anger, her frustration. I was very interested in knowing what Greg was up to and who this mystery woman was. The mystery slowly unravels and along the way you go through all the motions with Ellie as she launches her own investigation into what was really going on with her husband.

This was definitely more slow burn domestic suspense and not a fast-paced edge of your seat thriller and while I would’ve loved to see a little more suspense in it, I still enjoyed it! The writing was solid, the characters were well-developed, and the plot unfolded nicely with an ending that tied up nicely!

Slow slow story. Took me more than a month to get through and was just okay in the end. Almost gave up a few times.
