I LOVE the Percy Jackson series, so I was quite excited about this graphic novel version of the first book. But I knew it was a bad sign when I saw how thin the comic is, and sure enough, I discovered that a lot of the original story is cut out. I also think that this version loses a lot of the humor that makes the book series so much fun.

I enjoyed the graphic novel! It's a great refresher on the series without having to commit to the novels. There were a few changes made to the original plot, but that is to be expected to make it more palatable for a graphic novel. The reason this is getting 3 stars from me is that the art is utterly horrendous.

You can't go from the beautiful art of John Rocco on all your covers, box set art, and illustrated books and then give us.... whatever this is. The characters range from looking 30 to 60 but they certainly don't look 12. Not only that, but the art in general is just not aesthetically pleasing at all.

Different and unique art styles work just fine for comic books because we comic fans are pretty used to it even if we don't particularly like it. However, those who pick up the PJO graphic novels are not solely going to be graphic novel readers. The art is just a huge flop IMO and I'm sad to see the same artist and art style seem to follow through the rest of the series. If I were still the age that the series was originally targeted for, I feel kid me would have been incredibly put off by the artwork and how the characters all look so aged up and... make very strange facial expressions.

While I will probably read them for the enjoyment of the story, they won't be books I go out and buy to add to my Riordan collection since I don't foresee myself ever rereading them. In the future, I'd prefer to just pick up the actual books or the audiobooks.

Big flop with this one, Rick. Big. Flop.

This was okay, but I strongly disliked the art style and it didn’t feel like it added anything to the original story. The art is the most important part of a graphic novel and it didn’t deliver. I’m still going to continue reading all the graphic novels to see if I enjoy them more or if the art style matures.

An interesting premise, but I think I actually prefer the movie on this one. A few key differences. The addition of Ares in here was nice. I don’t like that we didn’t really have resolution with Luke in the book. I really like the concept and may continue to read them. I might read the next one in book form as opposed to graphic novel to see if that makes a difference.

3 stars. I did like the characters, and the story was interesting, but it felt quite rushed and I also didn't always like the art.

The Reading Rush 2019

I love Percy Jackson's adventures, and it was really cool to see them come to life in a graphic novel. Obviously this wasn't as good as the books themselves, but I don't think anyone expected them to be. You don't don't get the entire story, you get snippets of everything that happened, so if you've never read the books, you should definitely give them a go. My biggest issue, and only issue really, was the art style. It didn't really appeal to me, and I thought the characters looked a bit too old, but that's a personal preference. Overall really fun, can't wait to read the others.

I didn’t like the art style, it made everyone look old and serious so even the jokes didn’t translate well. It was like reading a comic made for adults instead of the adaptation of a middle-grade book.
