Barnes never disappoints.
Truly, one of the modern writers with the most charming and catching style.

The Only Story is more about memories than love. It's not about love story, it's about how your memories will remember it.

started out a little bit weird, but oh boy.
tender, captivating, heartbreaking. but also lucid, cynical, phylosophical. a thorough description of love, the most complete I've found to date. could make it into the notebook of casey paul. I liked the switch from first person (=protagonism, lively) to second person (=a bit more detached, dramatic, powerful) to third person (=cynical, logical, rational). Again the theme of memories and human tropes and what is, if it exists, the truth about people and relationships. feels old but also modern.

Beautifully written and structured from start to finish but wasted on a plot and set of characters that I couldn't possibly care less about.

Very detached from its subject matter I thought. Considering that it was all about love I didn’t feel it as I felt I should have. Maybe I was meant to feel that way. Certainly the ending suggests as much

This book probably deserves more than my ramblings after a particularly bad stint of unending migraines. I was unable to identify with the story, a story that seemed excruciatingly sad and nihilistic I might add. I took my about a month to read the last 100 pages (due to those migraines), but it had taken me over 9 months to read the first 120. I just couldn't work up to investing myself in the story.

Julian Barnes is slowly but surely turning into one of my favourite authors (if not THE favourite), and this book just adds to the admiration and love I have for his work.
What a beautifully written story, masterful use of language, of tenses, truly he's a playwright of the heart. I could feel everything that he had written and what a moving trip that was.
