A Reaper’s life is a busy one. Travelling around collecting the souls of the recently deceased. Jakaro or Jack was one such Reaper. To help him do his job without disturbance, his has an enchantment that makes people forget him as soon as they see him, this results in it being a lonely life. However, when he goes to buy a sandwich and meets Brin who does not forget him, he wanders if his life will change. But things do not always go smoothly and when Marley, an associate from his past arrives to cause trouble. Jacks life just got interesting.
At the start it felt that Jack was just doing his job on auto pilot. Whist he was dedicated it felt that he was missing something. However, as soon as he met Brin, it was like he had a purpose. Spending time with her bought out his gentle side. Brin was feisty and confident and as a couple they were perfect. Throughout the story you find out what Jack’s relationship with Marley was and the reasons behind Marley’s actions. Marley was a character you love to hate, a highly intelligent character who had planned everything to the finest detail.
Reading this story, you are taking on a journey, following Jack as collects the souls and whilst he plays the hero. When he takes Brin into the Fade was one of my favourite parts. The gift he gave her to enjoy her time there was magical. The Fade was an amazing place and it was so well described, you could imagine being there. Secondary characters Marshall Wyatt Earp and Ginger, were two characters I would like to know more about.
It was non stop action, making it a quick read. There were parts that was full of suspense and I could not imagine how Jack could accomplish all he did. The story was well planned as Marley’s end result was unexpected. This is a must for paranormal lovers and as a first in the series, it is a good introduction to the Fade.
